CAMPBELL, CA – (March 19, 2021) – Saama Technologies, Inc. (“Saama”) announced today that Saama Board Director Ajit Shetty, Ph.D., received an honorary doctorate degree from Ghent University’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for his services to science and research. Located in Flanders, Belgium, Ghent University is a top 100 university and one of the largest universities in the Dutch language area, with more than 47,000 students and 15,000 staff members.
Dr. Shetty, former Managing Director at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, was honored during Ghent University’s virtual 2021 Dies Natalis ceremony on March 19, which recognizes exceptional scientific and social merits. Dr. Shetty’s fellow honorees include Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web.
According to Ghent University, Dr. Shetty “is a great facilitator of academic research in the pharmaceutical sciences. In addition, he has supported the development of research institutes in numerous ways.” Dr. Shetty currently serves as the chairman of the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology in Zwijnaarde, Belgium, which is among the world’s top 10 research institutes.

Dr. Shetty helped launch the pharmaceutical arm of Janssen USA and turned it into a viable stand-alone company. He was the Chairman of Janssen Pharmaceutica and a member of the Operating Committee at Johnson & Johnson for nine years, where he developed and institutionalized a major transformation of the enterprise supply chain.
During his tenure at Janssen Pharmaceutica, Ajit worked as Managing Director and Executive Vice President, Finance, a role in which he spearheaded the expansion and growth of the Janssen Group of Companies via innovative product launches and effective commercialization strategies.
Dr. Shetty was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, India in 2008. The honor of Right Honorable Sir and the title of Baron were conferred upon him in 2005. He was also elected “Manager of the Year 2004” by the Trends/Flemish Management Association.
Dr. Shetty holds an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University and a Ph.D. (Metallurgy) and BA (Natural Sciences) from Trinity College, Cambridge University.
